Walk to School
Walk to school with us! It is a great opportunity to move, to have a chat, to meet someone or experience something. Schools, classes and parents are welcomed to join our challenge. Walk into your day.

This is our traditional autumn challenge, a project meant to increase the number of children who walk to school on a regular basis. Give it a try and find out that walking, cycling, or riding a scooter to school is fun, pleasant, and maybe easier than you thought. The participating schools organise walk-to-school days, using our practical Walk to Shool Manual. Parents wishing to walk with their children can subscribe to our initiative, too. Is driving the only way you can get to your school? Never mind – just park your car 5 to 10 minutes away from the school, and the walk is yours.
The fewer cars arrive up to the school itself, the safer and more pleasant environment for your children.
We organise an annual motivational contest for schools and parents.
Why to support walking to shool
-
Safety
A morning rush is dangerous for children. Especially small children can be overlooked among backing and parking cars. Drivers often stop on crossroads making it difficult for children to cross safely or to see properly. Parents who drive their children just to school gates endanger others who are walking or riding a scooter or a bike.
A regular walk with your children is the best way how to teach them road safety skills.
-
Health
Children should have at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. Nowadays children often don’t meet recommended levels of physical activity, every 4th child around 13 years of age suffers from overweight or obesity. Walking helps to prevent many diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes or hart or lung problems. Morning walk can boast brain activity and children who walk regularly are ready to learn and achieve better learning outcomes. Walking is also beneficial for mental wellbeing.
-
Environment
Every car in front of school gates contributes to worse air quality for children during the school day. Motor traffic causes 90 % of air pollution in Prague and is responsible for approximately 500 premature deaths in the Czech Republic every year. Children inside cars are exposed to higher levels of pollutants comparing to children walking by the road.

Social development and community building
Everyday way to school has an important role in socialization and other soft skills. On a way to school one can meet new friends or first love. It is a time for shared experiences, exploring the world and building a feeling of connection to the community. Walking with parents hand in hand is the precious time for sharing the worries and joys of the day.

Safe Routes to School
With the help of children, we map the surroundings of schools. In cooperation with traffic experts, we then improve safety in those areas.
